Description
What is Diazepam?
Diazepam is a benzodiazepine medication that works on the brain and nervous system to produce calming, muscle-relaxant, and anti-seizure effects.
Common Uses
Diazepam 10 mg may be prescribed for:
- Anxiety disorders (short-term management of severe anxiety)
- Muscle spasms and muscle stiffness
- Acute alcohol withdrawal symptoms, such as tremors and agitation
- Seizure control, including emergency treatment or as an add-on therapy
- Pre-procedure sedation to help patients relax before medical or dental treatments
Due to the risk of dependence, diazepam is generally intended for short-term use only.
How It Works
Diazepam increases the effects of GABA, a naturally occurring calming chemical in the brain, which helps reduce excessive nerve activity.

- Muscle weakness
- Reduced coordination or slower reaction times
Serious Side Effects (Seek Medical Help)

- Severe confusion or memory impairment
- Extreme drowsiness or difficulty waking

Important Warnings
- Risk of dependence and withdrawal with long-term use or sudden discontinuation

- May impair your ability to drive or operate machinery
- Use with caution if you are:
- Elderly
- Living with liver or lung disease
